Barry and Vale Harriers Newsletter February 2013
We are aware that more and more athletes are wearing branded items such as Superdry and Hollister to training sessions on a Wednesday. Could we please ask that athletes wear more suitable (and probably less expensive) sports training kit that is more appropriate for athletics training? We have had some issues when these items have gone missing and would like to alleviate the distress that this can cause. We will have some news shortly on club hoodies/kit that can be purchased and that if purchased will also benefit the fund-raising of the club. We would also like to promote our club when attending athletic meets and a club kit/colour that all athletes wear looks professional and gives our athletes a sense of identity.
During athletic meetings the club has a severe shortage of people to officiate and we would like to be able to draw on a register of parents that would be willing to help out. This does not necessarily mean at every meeting but we could call on you if we need to. If you are willing to help with officiating would you please approach Fred or Jo Carter. Thank you.
We are currently looking at updating our website so if there are any parents, guardians or family members that are able, willing and prepared to create a user-friendly website for us, please contact Michelle Briscombe, Club Secretary. We are also on “Barry & Vale Harriers/ Facebook” where messages will be posted if training is cancelled due to bad weather etc. All you need to do is ‘Like’ us and you will receive these updates
A letter will be coming to you shortly to renew membership. The club would like to add that as members of Barry and Vale Harriers all athletes are expected to compete at some time during the year. We understand that some athletes participate in other sports and activities but those sports often stop during the summer months, we would like a real push for all our athletes to represent their club during this year. Unless unavoidable there is usually transport to the meetings that the club provides. So no excuses! Support your club as you would the other activities and sports that you participate in! It is also a great experience to compete against other clubs and athletes in your age group. We would also like to highlight that as our coaches give up their free time to attend and coach every week than we would also expect athletes to attend regularly as well, some attendance is very erratic at present and we need to change this.

As you know Barry and Vale Harriers is a non-profit making club that is run for the benefit of the junior/senior/disabled athletes that are its members. That is why fundraising events are extremely important to us. We have applied to Morrisons for some bag packing days and will be letting you know the dates shortly. We would be grateful for as many athletes as possible to come and give a few hours of their time. It’s a great way to raise some money for the club and benefits all the athletes with new equipment, subsidised trips, mini-bus hire etc. as well as helping to pay for the hire of the grounds/floodlights and indoor training in the winter.
All of the coaching staff give their time for free so to give a few hours in return would be hugely appreciated.
The presentation evening will be held on April 12th at Barry Rugby Club. We hope that all our athletes will attend and look forward to celebrating the successes of our athletes during last year’s season. We will be holding another presentation evening for 2013 at the end of the year.
We will be approaching Barry College and UWIC to try and establish a link to sports students who would like to come and work with our athletes as part of their degree courses. If any parents can help us create this link with other institutions would you kindly let Jo or Fred know?
If there are any ex-Athletes who would be prepared to coach on a regular basis, particularly Field Events, will you please contact Fred, Training courses are available which the club will pay for
